ANNUAL REPORT


 

 

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT AND HEALTH SERVICES

 

Detroit ISD Head Start served eighty (80) children throughout the 2008-2009 school year.

 

There were twenty eight thousand seven hundred seventy seven (28,777) meals served to the children throughout the year. Breakfast and lunch were prepared and served by the Detroit ISD school cafeteria and nutritious afternoon snacks prepared and served by the Head Start Center. We provided healthy eating information to all of our parents, children, and staff through workshops and handouts.

 

Seventy-five (77) children were up-to-date on a schedule of age appropriate preventative and primary healthcare, including all immunizations and physical exams. Three (3) students withdrew before the first forty five (45) days of enrollment were completed. There were a total of eleven (11) children who received Asthma treatments, thirteen (13) overweight children, and one (1) vision-impaired child. Eleven (11) children completed follow up dental treatment. There were thirteen (13) disability children; 10 Speech, 1 Autism, 1 vision, 1 Non-categorical.

 

PROGRAM DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT

 

Detroit ISD Head Start has been serving low-income families and children for forty-four (44) years. Eligibility of enrollment was: Fifty-two (52) - income eligible, thirteen (13) - public assistance, two (2) - foster children, three (3) - homeless, and ten (10) - over the income.

 

Nutritious meals were reimbursed through the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).

 

Seven (7) parents, four (4) community members, and one (1) board liaison serve on Policy Council. This provides a way for the parents and community to participate in decision making for the program.

 

CURRICULUM

 

 The Galileo Curriculum is used to create lesson plans in alignment with the Pre-Kindergarten Guidelines and the Head Start Child Outcomes Framework. Galileo On-Line Assessment tracks the progress of Language and Math skills for all children. The Scholastic Curriculum in the classrooms helps to support the Galileo lessons.

 

FAMILY AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

 

Fourteen thousand two hundred twenty eight (14,228) total hours was dedicated to the Head Start Program by parents and community volunteers, providing high quality services to children and families. Their support and dedication helps to strengthen our program and the community.

 

During the 2008-2009 program year there was one hundred thirteen (113) volunteers. Eighty-eight (88) of the volunteers were either current or former Head Start parents. Volunteers participated in various aspects of the program, including assisting in the classroom, help with monitoring and evaluating the program, and program policy making and operations. They are a vital instrument in recruiting children and families for the Program.

 

There were a total of forty seven (47) two-parent families and twenty  seven (27) one-parent families. Current/former parents trained to become productive citizens: Ten (10) are employed by Detroit Head Start and nineteen (19) are employed as Detroit ISD employees and subs.

DETROIT ISD HEAD START / RED RIVER COUNTY MISSION STATEMENT

 

Red River County will serve all young children and their needs with primary focus on the provision of educational and developmental services and resources.

 

We will be advocates for the rights and well-being of all young children by providing comprehensive services that support their health, nutrition, and social well-being, in an environment that respects and supports diversity.

 

All children will have access to a developmentally appropriate curriculum based on the Head Start Child Outcomes Framework and Texas Pre-K Guidelines, as well as, knowledgeable and well-trained program staff and educators.
